Yes You Can Conference – May 29, 2012

The Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) operating under Horizons Youth Services (HYS) held a “Yes You Can Conference” Tuesday, May 29, 2012 to support student retention coordinated by Lisa Lewis, Student Personnel Officer and Tia Welch, Business Community Liaison. There were 33 students taken off center to the John XXIII Pastoral Center, Charleston, WV for an all-day retention conference. Guest speakers and topics included Carl Chadband, KISRA on “Overcoming Barriers” Mary Halen, BB & T and John Rymer, WV Division of Personnel spoke on “What Employers are looking for” Carl Lee (former NFL Player) Community Outreach, spoke on “Personal and Social Responsibility” Sandra Blaney, Owner of San’s Hair Loft, Beckley WV and Don Juan Staples, Owner of Don Juan Barbershop, Institute WV held workshops on small business ownership. Other center staff conducted workshops in the afternoon and two former students spoke with the group as well on how Job Corps changed their lives. The day was filled with positive information, motivation, and words of wisdom to encourage student success and retention. Students were able to receive several gift certificates, gift baskets and tie donations were received from Estep the Nu Look.
