The Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) operating under Horizons Youth Services (HYS) held a Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on Friday, October 26, 2012. Students and staff met at Greenbrier St. and walked down the Kanawha Blvd to Magic Island in signature pink T-shirts to bring awareness to Breast Cancer and the continuous need for funding to find a cure. Tia Welch, Business Community Liaison stated to the gathering “I encourage women AND men to do self exams and get an annual mammogram from their physician or local health provider” and “Breast Cancer can happen to anyone, it does not discriminate.” Staff member Tena Jones a breast cancer survivor gave remarks regarding her experience stating the importance of women – young and old doing self breast examinations and reporting anything suspicious to their physician. Regarding her diagnosis, she stated “I asked the Lord to give me strength and calmness not to get angry or upset, it was through his grace I got through it.” Pink balloons were released in honor of those who have succumbed to the disease. A special thanks to Lt. Steve Perry, Charleston Police Dept. and Mr. John Charnock, Charleston Parks and Recreation. Featured in the Saturday, October 27, 2012 Charleston Gazette Newspaper.
