Carl D. Perkins and the “Joy of Giving”

City of Prestonsburg’s 3rd annual Christmas parade. The students in Mr. Brandon Conley’s and Mr. Harold Auxier’s class were busy as Santa’s Elves constructing the float that would be in the parade. The students put their construction skills, as well as their imaginations, to use. The float consisted of a sleigh and reindeer leading the way and was driven by Electrical Instructor Ricky Yates. The Perkins Elves wer also on hand to greet the crowd and hand out candy. After the parade, students and staff enjoyed the City of Prestonsburg’s Christmas tree lighting and indulged in cookies and hot cocoa.
The parade was not the only project for students. On Saturday morning, December 4th, Chef Terry Marrs and students from his culinary class came in early to prepare and serve the “Breakfast with Santa” event held at Adams Middle School in Prestonsburg, Kentucky and hosted by the Floyd County Head Start. The students assisted the Floyd County Head Starts with their annual give away for families in need and helped Santa hand out presents to the children during the event.
Anna Shepherd, Floyd County Head Start Pre-School Director stated, “Again thanks to all involved from the Job Corps. Today both adults and students…Great Job! Great Job! This was the most efficient event we have had thanks to you guys.”
The Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Center spends countless hours working in the community on various projects throughout the year. Teaching the students the gift of giving back is a lesson that can’t be taught in a traditional classroom setting.
