“I want to get my diploma, a trade and a good job” was the statement that 21 year old Samantha Peltier gave to Donna Cooper, Outreach & Admissions Counselor when enrolling in the Job Corps program, in August, 2013.

This is exactly what Samantha did! She began her journey in August of 2013, arriving at Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Center in Prestonsburg, Ky. Samantha completed the Career Preparation Period (CPP) of the program and was eager to get started on her quest to passingher GED. Samantha worked hard and passed her GED on the first try. With one goal checked off Samantha was now ready to go into her trade of choice of carpentry. Samantha soon became a leader in and out of the classroom; she was a project leader on center jobs and a dorm leader after hours. With Mr. Brandon Conley as her instructor and mentor, Samantha gave every task 110 % knowing that hard work and dedication would pay off in the end.

In February of 2014, Samantha completed her trade in carpentry and quickly began searching for jobs. With the help of her instructor and the Career Transition Readiness team, she landed an interview in Lexington, KY at the VA hospital. Samantha impressed the team so much with her knowledge and certifications that she had earned at the Perkins Job Corps Center that she began work the next day at the VA hospital. Samantha continues to work full time and she checked off her last goal on the list she had made for herself when she came into the Job Corps program, “to get a good job”. Congratulations Samantha!!
