New Orleans Job Corps Teams with NOLA Trash Mob to Clean-Up

NOLA Trash Mob likes to say their business is picking up. Last week it did just that with some assistance from New Orleans Job Corps students.

On Friday, the two organizations teamed up to cleanup a local park as part of Global Youth Service Day 2014- an event that drew coverage from the local NBC affiliate WDSU-TV. Taylor Park in Central City was badly in need of some TLC and Job Corps along with NOLA Trash Mob came to the rescue.

“It was a great experience. We picked up trash in Taylor Park and got to meet people from two different organizations- NOLA Trash Mob and Leaders Against Litter,” says CMA student Doreonka Randolph. “It’s a very good thing to do and you get the opportunity to meet people like yourself who want to help the community.”

NOLA Trash Mob is a volunteer organizations dedicated to cleaning up local parks and neighborhoods throughout New Orleans. With the assistance of City Councilmember Susan Guidry, New Orleans Job Corps connected with representatives from the organization. Two days later, the two groups were making things happen in Taylor Park. Following the park cleanup, Job Corps students picked up litter in the surrounding Hollygrove neighborhood where the Center is located.

On Saturday, Global Youth Service Day activities continued as Health Occupation Technology (HOT) student Wendy Lopez took over twenty blood pressure screenings at the Healthy Start New Orleans Health Fair at A.L. Davis Park in Central City.

“The neighborhood has a lot of elderly residents and I was glad to be able to take their pressure and speak with them about ways to reduce their pressure if it’s high,” says Wendy. “Giving back to your city at every opportunity is what it is all about.
