Carl D. Perkins hosts Floyd County Chamber Leadership Class

The Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Center hosted the Floyd County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class on Jan. 22.The Floyd County Leadership program is designed to help participants gain insight into the operations, available programs, services and issues of Floyd County. The primary focus of Leadership Floyd County is to build a communication network of individuals willing to assist in advancing the county’s growth and promoting new and innovative ideas. Session topics include Health Care, Education, Economic Development, Environmental / Infrastructure, Government, Tourism.

The Leadership Class started the morning with presentations from Perkins Center Directors and managers, including Paula Davis, finance administration director; Wyvonna Davis, social development director; Jeana McKenzie, student training director; Jason Murphy, student personnel manager; John Hall, safety & security manager; Pat VanHoose, wellness manager; and Jimmie Slone, business community liaison.

 

After the presentations, the class switched gears and moved to the center’s gymnasium to begin Challenge Course training, provided by course facilitators Beverly Compton, security & protective services instructor; Thomas Rouse, career transition readiness instructor; and Ben Runyon, career preparation instructor. The Challenge Course is part of the leadership component of Perkins’ student training program. The course is used to build stronger relationships with students by providing them with an opportunity to connect with their peers and improve their self-confidence. The challenge course also helps students develop better communication and problem-solving skills, understand the importance of cooperation, and appreciate individual differences, accept personal limitations and rise to personal challenges.

The participants in the leadership class completed two hours of team-building activities and climbing challenges. The center provided the class with lunch prepared by the Culinary Class, and BCL Jimmie Slone showed a social media presentation. The day concluded with a tour of the Perkins center.
