Cleveland Job Corps Center- Central State University

March 12, 2015, students from Cleveland Job Corps Cen-ter (CJCC) toured Central State University (CSU). Found-ed in 1887, CSU is a Historically Black College and Uni-versity (HBCU) located in Wilberforce, Ohio. Our tour guide, Daniel Valentine, a native of Detroit, Michigan, welcomed us with open arms. When Mr. Valentine was asked why he came to CSU, he explained, “CSU was one of the first schools that accepted me and because of that, I jumped straight on this opportunity. I knew immediately that CSU was the place for me. Also, I wanted to attend a Historically Black University, and it’s not too far away from home, but it’s far enough for me to get the “away from home” experience.” During the tour, Daniel told us about the vast history of CSU and about Paul Roberson, who I (Demarius Rob-inson) knew very little about prior to the tour. There is a mural of Roberson’s life in the main lobby titled “The Tallest Tree in the Forrest,” depicting various periods of his life. CSU is now home to some former CJCC students and for me, the thought of just knowing that they were once in the same position that we are in now, shows that it is possible to go out and take the initiative to exceed expectations.
