Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Students working to help others

Lessons learned by caring and doing. This is exactly what the Carl D. Perkins Construction students did when they spent The week of July 27th -31 assisting disabled veterans and flood victims throughout Floyd and Johnson Counties. This is the third year that the Perkins students have assisted with this summer week long work with the Mountain Care Partnership a Christian based organization out of Southwest Missouri that serves the Central Appalachia region of Kentucky.

Students work with different teams in Johnson and Floyd Counties repairing roofs, building handicap ramps, replacing floors just whatever is in need of repairs.. However this year another service was needed in the Flat Gap area in Johnson County. On July 13th, the community was devastated with flash flooding that moved entire houses off their foundation, left hundreds of people homeless and was the cause of four deaths. Eric Tackett a construction student from Mr. Brandon Conley’s class and Mr. Brandon Knapp form Mr. Yates class worked with two volunteer ‘s who only what to be known as Don and Doug a former engineer and architect from Missouri, on a home that was severely damaged in the flood. They group tore out the entire room that had been completely under water. Everything will have to be replaced floors, walls. But the group was ready for the task, as they worked in 90 degrees temps.

When talking with Doug he stated that the students working were such fine young men, and very professional and worked hard. He also went on to say that Perkins are doing a great job teaching these young men not only a valuable trade, but how to act like young men.
