Charleston Job Corps Center attends Education Summit-June 19, 2017

The Charleston Job Corps Center was represented at the State of African Americans in WV and K-12 Education Summit held Monday, June 19, 2017 at WV State University. The event addressed issues of African Americans in the state of WV and provided a review of 2003 Select Committee on Minority Affairs Report, Review of Educational Achievement Gap and High Suspensions of Black Students, Disproportionate Minority Contact in WV’s Juvenile Justice System, Over-representation of Minorities in WV’s Prison System, High Black Unemployment and Low Labor Participation Rates, High Black Poverty Rate, Low Political Engagement, Voter Registration and Turnout and NAACP Participation, Health Disparities and lower Life Expectancy for Blacks than Whites, Overview of Governor’s Bill to Address Poverty and Substance Abuse (HB-2724) Overview of the West Side Revive Movement and Demonstration Pilot Project and “Where do We Go From Here” Developing a State-Wide Network and Movement. The event was sponsored by the WV State NAACP, Tuesday Morning Group,Herbert Henderson Office of Minority Affairs and Charleston Branch NAACP. The summit was well attended with business leaders, civic organizations, state legislators, city council members, mayoral candidates, non-profits, education and labor representatives and clergy in attendance. Business Community Liaison, Tia Welch and Training Director, Sermario Wiggins represented the center.
