At the age of 12, Nishimwe Sosthene came to the United States as an immigrant from Tanzania, in East Africa, because his parents wanted him to have a better quality of life. In 2015, he graduated from Lincoln-West High School in Cleveland, Ohio. After speaking with his cousin who is a Job Corps alum, he decided to enroll into the Job Corps program.

Living at the Cleveland Job Corps Center was a huge adjustment for Mr. Sosthene because of the language barrier and having to live apart from his family. Eager and determined to succeed, he began to adapt to his new surroundings. He finished his trade at Cleveland Job Corps on May 8, 2017, after obtaining his Facility Maintenance, OSHA 10, REM SEC and CPR certifications.

Mr. Sosthene began a new chapter at Gary Job Corps Center in San Marcos, Texas on May 9, 2017, where he is enrolled in the Overhead Linesman Advanced Training Program. Upon completion, he plans to attend college to study international business. His long-term goals are to one day buy a home for his family, move back to Africa and start his own electrical company so he can give back to his community. His advice to other students is to “mind your own business, do what you came here to do and get as much education as you can.”
