Muhlenberg Job Corps Prepares for New Training Program

Hard Trade Foundation students and Heavy Equipment Operations students install new shelving in the Material Handling and Distribution Operations program training area.

In an effort to align with current needs of area employers, Muhlenberg Job Corps Center will soon offer a new career technical training program, Materia lHandling and Distribution Operations. Students enrolled in this new program will be trained to move stock or other materials from one location to another to prepare them for shipment or distribution; use warehouse managemen tsoftware and software systems to capture and retrieve logistic information; read work orders or receive instructions to determine assignments or necessary materials and equipment; and record numbers of units handled or moved using daily production sheets or work tickets.

Hard Trade Foundation students and Heavy Equipment Operations students collaborated to install shelving units needed for the new program. The shelving units are duplicates of what an actual material handler would see in a warehouse operation. This replication of an actual work site allows Job Corps to train students to be job ready when they complete the program.

Career Technical Training Foundations Instructor Charles Wiseman said, “I am excited for the new trade. It has the potential to allow students to come into the Job Corps program and leave with credentials that can lead to a well-paying job.”

The new training program is scheduled to accept students around the first of March.

The Muhlenberg Job Corps Center has immediate openings for individuals aged 16-24. Students enrolled in Job Corps can complete their high school education, earn industry-recognized certifications in Heavy Equipment Operations, Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Welding, Commercial Driver’s License – Class B, Certified Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, Pharmacy Technician and, starting soon, Material Handling and Distribution Operations.
