During the week of October 22-27, 2012, DJCC trainees and staff volunteered at various community organizations relating to ”Make a Difference Day, 2012″. Partner organizations included: Detroit Coast Guard, Gleaner’s Community Food Bank, Detroit Rescue Mission, John Dingell VA Hospital and Forgotten Harvest. Other partners included: AmeriCorps Urban Safety Project, Cody Rouge Community Action Alliance, Arise Detroit, Behr Paint, McDonald’s, Starbucks, Blight Buster, Tanner Plumbing, Home Depot and many more.

Detroit Job Corps Student goes to China

Detroit Job Corps Center student selected to represent the United States in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Youth Skills Camp in China. APEC is the premier Asia-Pacific economic forum. Its primary goal is to support sustainable economic growth and prosperity in the Asian-Pacific region.

Elayna Tucker, age 20, Detroit Job Corps Center trainee was selected along with three other Job Corps students to represent the United States at the APEC Youth Skills Camp. The camp took place August 9-19,2012. The Chinese Government paid all travel, lodging and program expenses.

The APEC Youth Skills Camp promotes and generates awareness of the importance of Career Technical Training and Skills Development to economies around the world.

Students will visit Beijing, Nanjing, Wuxi and Shanghai. The camp will include Youth Forum field visits to vocational colleges, enterprises, and public training facilities, in addition to skills demonstration among participants and cultural tours.

DJCC Trainees visits Congressman Hansen Clarke’s Office

On Monday, June 11, 2012, Detroit Job Corps Center (DJCC) Student Government Association (SGA) visited Congressman Hansen Clarke’s District Office. During the visit, trainees had an opportunity to educate and discuss with Congressman Clarke and his staff about the benefits of the Job Corps program. Pictures of the meeting were taken with the Congressman, his staff and Detroit Job Corps Center’s SGA members and will be posted on the Congressman’s web page this week

DJCC Trainees Volunteers at Wayne County Health Expo

Detroit Job Corps Center (DJCC) trainees and staff collaborated with Wayne County Health and Human Services Department for their annual “Cover the Uninsured Health Expo”. The event took place on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at Cobo Hall. Over 700 Uninsured applicants came to the event to be educated about the resources that are available for uninsured families, children, and individuals living in the City of Detroit. Some of the duties trainees performed were: registration,health screenings, food distribution and information guides.

DJCC Volunteers at Capuchin Soup Kitchen

On May 17, 2012, Detroit Job Corps Center trainees and staff volunteered at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. Capuchin provides full-course nutritious meals to hundreds of men, women, and children who are homeless or experiencing economic difficulties. The Center also serves as the distribution site for appliances and furniture for families re-establishing households after a fire or a stay in a shelter, or who are in need or emergency food and clothing.

Detroit Job Corps Center (DJCC) collaborated with The Greening of Detroit, USDA/USFS Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Data Analysis in the second phase of Dorais Park Tree Planting on Saturday, April 21, 2012. Before planting the trees, the Citizen Forester demonstrated the proper way to plant trees. Over 302 volunteers assisted in the planting of 232 trees. On May 11, 2012, DJCC trainees and staff returned to plant additional trees.

DJCC attends “A Salute to Veterans: Forum and Resource Fair”

On November 10, 2011 trainees and staff from the Detroit Job Corps Center (DJCC) attended Congressman Hansen Clarke and Congressman John Conyers ” A Salute to Veterans: Forum and Resource Fair”. At the fair the trainees had an opportunity to speak with both representatives about the various Veterans’ Day community activities that DJCC would be involved with during veteran’s week. Many valuable resources were available for the veterans at the fair. Local media was present.

DJCC Partners with World Medical Relief “Blanket Distribution”
