NJROTC students at the Excelsior Springs Job Corps Center served as the color guard at a recent Major League Baseball game at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. The students presented the flags of the United States and the United States Navy JROTC before the game between the Kansas City Royals and Detroit Tigers. Congratulation to the students for representing the NJROTC program and the Excelsior Springs Job Corps Center so well.

Ronald Whitley graduated from the Facilities Maintenance trade at the Excelsior Springs Job Corps Center in late 2012. Ronald then found employment with the Caryle Apartments in Shawnee, Kansas. Making over $13 an hour, Ronald serves as a member of the Maintenance staff. An added benefit is that he gets a discounted rent on his apartment. Congratulations and well done!

Students and staff of the Excelsior Springs Job Corps Center helped to get aide to the victims of the tornado that struck Moore, Oklahoma on May 20^th. Enough material was gathered to make 83 care packages which consisted of a hand towel and washcloth, a comb, shampoo, soap, a tooth brush, toothpaste, band aids, and various plastic bags. Students and staff donated items and money.

Physical fitness is a priority for the students of the Excelsior Springs Job Corps Center. Staff from Recreation recently held the ESJCC 5-K which featured 13 students and one staff. Runners had to complete a trip around the center six times. Congratulations to winner Derius who completed with a time of 26:10.

Students from the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program at the Excelsior Springs Job Corps Center participated at the Warrior Dash. The three mile obstacle course combined lots of mud along with fire, climbing, tunnels, and water. It was held in late April in Kansas City.

April 23^rd, 2013 was World Book Night. It is an annual nationwide event that sends thousands of reading enthusiasts into their communities to share their love of reading with non to light readers. Stephany Hughes came to the Excelsior Springs Job Corps Center and gave interested students a copy of The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan. The novel takes place during the Dust Bowl in the Mid West during the 1930’s.

The Alliance for Economic Inclusion held a conference at the Kauffman Foundation Conference Center of Kansas City, Missouri recently. Three students of the Excelsior Springs Job Corps, Kansas City Alternate Training Location were in attendance. The focus of the AEI conference was on expanding financial services for underserved populations, including savings accounts, affordable remittance products, small dollar loans programs, targeted financial education programs and other asset building programs. The students also participated in two breakout sessions: ”Discussing Latino community support partnership opportunities” and “Discussing Free Financial Education Resources for the Kansas City Community”.

Excelsior Springs Job Corps Center students celebrate graduation from center and local program.

Students at the Kansas City Alternate Training Location of the Excelsior Springs Job Corps Center held a graduation ceremony. 77 students earned certifications as Certified Nurse Assistants or as Pharmacy Technicians. They also earned their High School Diplomas, if it had not already been obtained. Barbara Haynes-Jenkins, the owner of a local talent and advertising agency gave the Graduation Address.

Students from the Facilities Maintenance Trade competed the Construction Green-Up Program for environmental remediation training at the Kansas City Kansas Community College. The program is a collaboration between the college, OAI, the Metropolitan Energy Center, and Era Environmental.

Students of the Excelsior Springs Job Corps Center were featured at the March meeting of the Excelsior Springs Chamber of Commerce. Students from the Culinary Arts trade prepared and served the meal. Students from the Junior Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps assisted with parking, opened the door, and gave a flag ceremony for those in attendance and presented the flag to the retiring Executive Director of the Chamber, Terry Smelcer. The members of the Chamber learned about Job Corps and the benefit it gives to the community as well as what they could do to help impact the lives of our students.

Jeff completed the Culinary Arts trade at the Excelsior Springs Job Corps Center in 1988. Following graduation. he moved to New Mexico. Later he enlisted in the United States Navy. Retiring from the Navy after more than 20 years he is now a student at the University of Central Missouri. Jeff recently visited the center and spoke to students and visited with staff. Jeff encouraged the students to never give up and pursue all the opportunites that Job Corps presents.

Welding students at Excelsior Springs Job Corps Center help to improve classroom.

Welding students have been assisting the Maintenance Department at the Excelsior Springs Job Corps Center to help improve their classroom. The students have worked with the Maintenance staff to improve the exhaust system that takes smoke out of the classroom. The way it was previously installed, the smoke would by-pass the intake vent and the result was that the classroom was very smoky. None of the materials needed to be purchased. The project was able to be completed using existing scrap material.
