Students Assist at the 32nd Annual Senior Citizens Thanksgiving Dinner

Flint Genesee Job Corps students assisted at the 32nd Annual Senior Citizens Thanksgiving Dinner held at Foss Avenue Baptist Church in which over 300 elderly citizens attended. Various leaders in the community to include State Representative Woodrow Stanley, who gave presentations and served food. Students assisted as well, by preparing trays, serving drinks and desserts. The event was covered by ABC News and the Flint Journal Newspaper.

A special article was in the newspaper, Flint-Our Community Our Voice, while serving their community while learning to paint as a vocation. Students painted a mural on the barn of Calvary Lutheran Church – “Come Grow With Us”. One student explained “I used to be one of the people coming to get food – now I’m able to help others find food at this community garden by working on the mural”. Calvery Luthern Church appreciated the work of the students and surprised them with a pizza party on their last day of work.

A special article was in the CPS Courier Newspaper of Flint Genesee Job Corps students giving back to the community in a big way by participating in the Make a Difference Day event, assisting 13 organizations to include big Brothers Bib Sisters of greater Flint, American Cancer Society – Breast Cancer Walk, Foster Hope- Shy – Safe Home for Youth, New Jerusalem Baptist Church, Catholic Charities Community Closet and Soup Kitchen, Carriage Town Ministries, Esther Lady Society Banquet, Sandi’s Catering, Disability Network, Topology, Flint Art Project, Habitat for Humanity, Mott Public Park. The students were proud of their accomplishments and the community appreciated their work, seeing how young people can make a difference in the improvement of lives of others.

Flint Genesee Job Corps Students Assist at Annual CRIM Race!

The CRIM Race – held in Flint, Michigan drew over 15,000 runners from throughout the United States and other countries this year. Among the volunteers for the exciting event were students of the Flint Genesee Job Corps Center. In preparation of the event, students unwrapped and sorted the medals for the 1, 5, 8, and 10 mile run completers at the CRIM Office. On the day of the event, students gave out medals to completers of the race as well as pizza and water to thousands of guest. It was a lot of work for all but well-worth the effort… The center was requested, amoung other organizations, to participate again next year!

NINETY-SEVEN GRADUATES FROM FLINT GENESEE JOB CORPS

Ninety-seven graduates participated in the National Job Corps Graduation Commencement held on August 24th at Flint Genesee Job Corps. The keynote speaker was Mr. David McGee from the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Great Flint, with special acknowledgements from representatives from Congressman Dale Kildee, Senator Debbie Stabenow, Senator Carl Levin, State Representative Woodrow Stanley’s Office and the Regional Chamber of Commerce. Personalized Letters of Congratulations to graduates were received and expressed at the Graduation Commencement from Senator Levin, Congressman Kildee, and Senator Stabenow. Student peers, family, friends, and staff are proud of each of the graduates accomplishments and wish them well in future endeavours.

Flint/Genesee Job Corps participate in the Fall Fitness 4 Challenge!

Center staff and student representatives, along with various organizations in the community, were aired on Fox66 News during the kickoff for the Fall Fitness 4 Challenge, sponsored by Health Plus, Greater Flint Health Coalition, and Commit to Fit!. During the kick-off, organizational representatives participated in various healthy competitions, such as short relays, fitness balls, strategic exercises, etc. before the 4 week physical activity challenge. Students and staff of the Flint Genesee Job Corps will be participating in the 4 week challenge, which physical activity will be tracked daily.

FLINT GENESEE JOB CORPS “ROCKS THE VOTE” FOR CONSTITUTION DAY!

Constitution Day was a big event at the Flint Genesee Job Corps Center for students and staff. The Constitution Day program included presentations from various community leaders, to include our County Commissioner, who spoke about the importance of young people voting, followed by presentations from students who entered the Constitution Day Essay Contest . Voter registration was offered on center and 93.7 Radio Station was on hand for a live broadcast, with students answering questions from the D.J. live about the program!

Various activities for points toward the ” registration stamp cards” at 5 stations for the grand prize drawing for students included:

1. Constitution Video and Preamble Handouts, 2. Constitution Face Painting, 3. Red/White/Blue Bracelet Making, 4. Flag Hunt, and 5. Constitution Bingo!

Constitution Day at the Flint Genesee Job Corps Center was educational and fun for everyone!

Flint Genesee Students Assist at Fox 66 News Fall Festival!

Students from Flint Genesee Job Corps Center were right up front when thousands of guest arrived at the annual Fox 66 News Fall Festival held on September 15th at the Perani Center, handing out literature of the event and assisting with traffic control. Students were given Fox 66 T-shirts and also g a pizza party at the station for their efforts. The Center was invited to participate in the next Fall Festival as well, because of the students positive representation of Job Corps.

SGA Participates in COFY’s Health Fair

The Student Government Association (SGA) of the Flint Genesee Job Corps Center participated, along with various other organizations, at the Community Outreach for Family and Youth (COFY) Health Fair held at the New Jerusalem Baptist Church. The Health Fair was held to share valuable information to residents regarding health, nutrition, and exercise.
