“My past made me stronger,” claimed Blue Ridge Job Corps graduate Alysha Haley. Growing up in foster care, Alysha was in and out of several homes, some of which were not good environments. Vowing to make a better life for herself, she decided to start looking for a way to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse. That opportunity came in the form of Blue Ridge Job Corps.
Alysha came into her own during her time at Blue Ridge, volunteering at Atkins Food Pantry, Marion Elementary School, and the Remote Access Medical Clinic. Ultimately, she was able to earn her certification to become a nursing assistant.
Since graduation, Alysha has become a mother, and her daughter Serenity is now 8 months old. Alysha works as a private duty nurse, which she absolutely loves. “I have learned so much about nursing, and I don’t plan on stopping here,” she explained. Her goal is to return to school in the near future to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
Alysha stated that she was the first person in her family to leave her hometown to pursue a better future. “I know it’s hard, but sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone in order to grow,” she advised. “I never dreamed I would have the life that I have now, and I could not have done it without Job Corps.”
