Dates enrolled: 11/30/2015 – 2/19/2017

Susie Riddick graduated from high school in Portsmouth, VA, but had trouble finding employment with only a high school diploma. She knew she had to receive further education in order to start a career, but did not know where to start. Fortunately, her aunt was familiar with Job Corps and suggested that Susie give the program a look. “Once I took the time to look at all Job Corps had to offer without me having to pay for anything, I decided to apply,” she said.
Susie took full advantage of the opportunities a Blue Ridge Job Corps, completing not one, but two Career Technical Training programs: Medical Office Support and Certified Nursing Assistant. Of the two, Susie gravitated more towards CNA, and she passed her state board exams with flying colors.
In addition to her studies, Susie was also involved in a variety of community service and volunteer activities. Her favorite such activity was going off center to assist at food banks such as Atkins Food Pantry and Feeding America.
Susie is currently working as a CNA at Commonwealth Senior Living in Norfolk, VA, and she says that she is really enjoying getting to know all of the residents there. Susie would like to urge Job Corps students to take advantage of all of the opportunities available. “The great thing about Job Corps is they allow you to get multiple certifications. I took two trades, and I found the right one for me. Just remember it is ok to take the time to discover your passion.”
