“I came to Blue Ridge Job Corps because I knew that it would lead to me to a career that would change my life,” stated BRJC graduate Danielle Crement. She had always planned on becoming a teacher, but when she learned of the free opportunities available through Job Corps, she decided to try another path. “I really felt that the Job Corps program would fit my learning needs better than any other program,” she continued, “so I decided to give health care a shot.”
What Danielle discovered was that no only could she make a career health care, but it was actually her calling. “The opportunity to help other during some of their most difficult times is something that became very important to me,” said Danielle. While enrolled at Blue Ridge Job Corps, Danielle completed certifications in Clinical Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy Tech., and Patient Care Tech, but it wasn’t always easy. Midway through her trade, Job Corps and the world as a whole was blindsided by the coronavirus pandemic. For Danielle, this meant completing the program virtually. “It was difficult going from a very structured learning environment within the classroom to adjusting to working from home and dealing with all the distractions that come with it,” she stated. “It took a lot of effort, motivation, and will power to do, but it was worth it in the end.”
Danielle is now working full-time at Central Virginia Family Physicians (CVFP) in New London, VA, where she is a Medical Assistant and Phlebotomist. She has not yet decided whether to return to school in the future, and right now she is extremely happy with the career she has chosen. “Find a support group,” she advises. “If you have friends who are just as driven as you are, you can help push each other to the finish line.”
