Carl D. Perkins Job Corps students “Learn about the War on Poverty”

April 28th, 2014

INEZ — Thursday April 24, 2014 marked 5o years since former U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson visited Inez, KY and promised to end poverty in America on April 24, 1964.  Friday, April 25th, the Inez community members along with the Kentucky congressional delegation, state and local elected officials and business leaders  commemorated the occasion with a special event at the Roy F. Collier Community Center honoring the 50th anniversary of LBJ’s declared War on Poverty.

The event, “Dream! Martin County,” featured former Arkansas governor and talk-show host Mike Huckabee as the keynote speaker. Martin County native and country star Angaleena Presley told the Perkins students, that Job Corps was where her mom and dad met, that she still has their letters they wrote to each other.

Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Culinary and Security & Protective students had the opportunity to celebrate and show off their skills with culinary students preparing a first class meal for the VIP room, while the Security & Protective service students took care of traffic, parking and crowd control. Because of President Johnson’s efforts with the Act of Job Corps program and Volunteers in Service to America, America’s youth, have been given opportunities they otherwise would not have had.

Carl D. Perkins students are proof of why Job Corps is able to celebrate their fiftieth anniversary in 2015.  Job Corps is one of the longest running programs offered to disadvantaged youth in America because our students are a stellar example that “Job Corps Works”!
