Carl D. Perkins Students pull double duty

Saturday’s are usually a day of rest or fun activities for most young people. The students at the Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Center pulled double duty working two events on Saturday June 6th, 2015. The first event was the Universal Day of Prayer held on Varia Mountain, Fire Station Hill in Martin, Ky. The event was hosted by the Varia Family Foundation and the community. The theme of the event was ” A community that prays together stays together”. The Perkins Culinary student along with their Instructor Chef Terry Marrs served the community refreshments after the event, while the Security & Protective Service students with their instructor Mr. Aaron Blevins handled all of the parking and safety procedures.

The second event the students headed to the Big Sandy Community & Technical College for the dedication of the Dr. Mahendra Varia Planetarium at the East KY Science Center. Student Government Association students along with the Culinary class and other local school children helped with unveiling the new sign that now sets in front of the planetarium. Dr. Chandra Varia of the Varia Family Foundation dropped by the center to treat all students and staff to fruit and cookies as a token of the foundations appreciation for assisting with these events.
