Perkins Job Corps adds 2nd Advanced Security program

Addition will help meet demand for advanced training
Carl D. Perkins Job Corps is adding a second Advanced Security and Protective Services training program to its career technical training program options.
This second program will help meet the high demand for Advanced Security and Protective Services training. Perkins Job Corps first offered the security advanced training program three years ago.
The high demand for the program, fueled by large numbers of interested students, and the fact that the Advanced Security Training program is a top performing trade at Perkins Job Corps led to the decision to add a second Advanced Security and Protective Services program. The Perkins Advanced Security program was named “Best Career Technical Training Program for Program Year 2018” by Horizons Youth Services, a major subcontractor at Perkins Job Corps. That distinction was based on results of the Job Corps Outcome Measurement System, which evaluates the quality, effectiveness and efficiency of Job Corps training programs and other aspects of operation.

Perkins Job Corps’ Advanced Security program is producing highly trained individuals who quickly obtain meaningful full-time employment in the security industry, with a starting wage of $12 an hour or more, or who further their education in the law enforcement field.

Perkins Job Corps consistently develops and sustains partnerships with industry employers for direct employment opportunities for our graduates and to provide on-the-job training or work-based learning experience for trainees. An example is the partnership with Luther Luckett Correctional Complex in LaGrange, KY. Accepted Advanced Security graduates who are interested in becoming correctional officers at Luther Luckett Correctional Complex receive free housing and seven paid weeks of correctional officer training. Those who successfully complete the program are offered employment as a correctional officer, starting at $14.42 an hour, with opportunities for advancement.

Advanced Security and Protective Services graduates also are sought after by the military. Perkins Job Corps partners with military recruiters from every branch of service to recruit interested students, offers proctored military entrance tests (The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery tests) monthly, and provides study assistance if needed. Graduates who join the military enter at a pay scale of $17.72 an hour. Recent Advanced Security graduates also have obtained employment with their local sheriff’s offices or police departments, and others work for private and public companies.

Individuals interested applying for the Advanced Security and Protective Services program must be at least 18 years old and have completed basic security training. Advanced Security training involves rigorous physical fitness training three times a week and provides opportunities for certifications in the Use of Force, Handcuffing, Baton, Less than Lethal Shotgun, OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) Spray, M26C Taser training, and more. Perkins Job Corps Advanced Security’s work-based learning experiences include providing event security for Louisville’s world-famous Kentucky Derby, Pikeville’s Appalachian Wireless Arena events, festivals and more.
