Playing Their Part: Perkins students help make bluegrass festival a reality

Bluegrass is without question a huge part of Eastern Kentucky’s cultural heritage and so when local organizers made plans months ago to put on a multi-day bluegrass event in Prestonsburg, it was again students from Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Center who answered the call to assist in seeing the concert get kicked off on just the right note.

Students from the Security and Protective Services class at the center logged more than 400 hours of security and protective services over the course of the concert, which ran from Wednesday, July 27, through Sunday, July 31.

This was the first time the festival had taken place and was held at the StoneCrest Equine Center in Prestonsburg. The students’ instructor, Mr. Carl Wilson, could not say enough about the involvement and commitment of his class.

“They worked the five days on security and they also had a hand in everything it took to set the concert up,” Wilson said. “I couldn’t be more pleased with their dedication and professionalism.”

During the course of the their work, the students also had the chance to take breaks from time to time to meet many of the acts booked for the event such as band members from Coal Town Dixie, The Roy’s , and Chris Knight to name a few.
