Carville Job Corps Center Student Employees participated in the National Job Corps Association Groundhog Shadow Day Event

Carville Job Corps Center Student Employees participated in the National Job Corps Association Groundhog Shadow Day Event on Feb 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. The student’s employees along with staff chaperones from each Career Technical Training area choose businesses which were aligned with their CTT areas. Groundhog Shadow Day T- Shirts were issued to student employees and chaperones to wear. The 2011 Groundhog Shadow Day T- Shirt was Designed by student employee Candance Hawk. Great Shirts!!! OA- Office Administration: Two students were selected from the office administration class To shadow US Congressman William Bill Cassidy’s state district office. Students were given the opportunity to see firsthand what the daily business of United States Congressman Staff duties entail. WAFB TV- 9 Assistant News Director, Ms. Jolene Reilly was shadowed by students Courtney Duncan and William Fleet. Student employees got the chance to view the behind the scene look at how the news is produced three times a day. Student employees were also featured live during the 12-noon Newscast. HBI: Facilities Maintenance The Facilities Maintenance class went to Pumba Electric in New Roads, LA. The students, along with their instructor, Mr. Steve Engel, and the CTT Supervisor, Mr. Lane Linton, were able to tour the entire facility and got the opportunity to learn about electricity. Mr. Ralph LeBlanc, of Pumba Electric, conducted the tour and gave the students several demonstrations and displays of how electricity works and what kinds of projects Pumba Electric is working on. The tour was very informative and the students were exceptionally behaved during the trip. Automotive Technologies The Automotive students, accompanied by the CTT Supervisor, Lane Linton, went to two of the top auto dealerships in the state. The first stop on the trip was to Price LeBlanc Nissan in Prairieville, LA. The Service Department Manager, Mr. Nate Gaudin, gave the students a guided tour of the dealerships state of the art service department and quick lube service facility. The student enjoyed the trip and got to observe certified technicians service a variety of vehicles. The second stop on the trip was just down the road to the Price LeBlanc Toyota dealership. This is a brand new facility from the ground up. The General Manager, Mr. Johnny DeArmond, and the Service Department Foreman, Mr. Richard Waller welcomed the students and lead them through out the facility. The students got to visit the huge, high-tech, and state of the art service area. Also, during this part of the trip, the students got the opportunity to watch the quick-lube technicians in action. The students got to participate in the service inspection process of each vehicle that comes into the quick-lube department for service. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were encouraged by the possibility of returning to the two dealerships on a Work-Based Learning assignment in the near future. The students were also treated to lunch in the dealership’s new Tropical Smoothie Café. The student’s really enjoyed the lunch. The trip was a huge success. Roustabout Operator The Roustabout Operator students and the CTT Supervisor, Mr. Lane Linton, had the opportunity to visit and tour the Gillis W. Long Military Installation. Although Gillis W. Long Center sits just next door to the Carville Job Corps Center, many of the center’s students and staff don’t know much about what goes on at the installation. The students were treated to a guided tour of the entire facility. The tour was lead by the installation’s Safety Officer, Mr. Bruce Casey. The students were able to visit the power station that supplies electricity to the center’s facilities, the welding and carpentry shops, the Facilities Engineering Department, the National Hansen’s Disease Cemetery, the Post Exchange, the Dining Facility, and the Hotel and Conference Center. The students were also given a first hand inspection of two giant boilers that provide the installation with hot water and warm air. They also got to inspect the inner-working of two massive diesel powered generators which supply emergency electricity to the installation when needed.
