The Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) operating under Horizons Youth Services (HYS) joined Job Corps Centers across the nation to observe Youth-2-Youth (Y2Y) Campaign: Partners 4 Peace, September 19-23, 2016.

Y2Y Campaign is a student-led initiative to prevent violence on Job Corps centers and their local community. Y2Y Student Ambassadors and leaders will work to implement various programs, speakers, events and community support in this ongoing initiative.

CJCC Y2Y week kicked-off with guest speaker, Shift EMS Supervisor, Captain Mark Strickland, Charleston Fire Department & Paramedics. Captain Strickland witnesses the substance abuse epidemic across the city. He informed students and staff regarding the dangers of drugs. Strickland says, “If someone offers you drugs, say no. A no to drugs is a yes to your future and family, because no one wants to lose their freedom by going to jail. He encouraged students to be cautious of their social media posts, because employers pay attention to what you put on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to name a few.

Capt. Strickland told the youth 16-24, “If you are pictured with alcohol or narcotics you can ruin your chance of employment.” In closing, Captain Strickland said, “the easiest way to stay away from violence is to never get in it.” Students were encouraged to discuss situations to adjust to new situations and stay out of trouble.

Y2Y Campaign: Partners 4 Peace events will continue on Tuesday with non-violent T-shirt making day in the recreation dept. sponsored with SGA, Wednesday with a community walk down Kanawha Blvd. beginning at 2:00 p.m. commencing with a balloon release at Magic Island, Thursday Y2Y Assembly at Stonewall Jackson Middle School and Candlelight vigil on campus at 6:00 p.m. and Friday finale will be Movie on the Lawn sponsored in conjunction with SGA & Social Development dept.
