Charleston Job Corps Center Student Highlight Emily Luhrs-June 2018

CJCC Student of the Month Emily Luhrs

Emily Luhrs from Redding PA is currently in Career Transition Services. She completed medical office support and dental assistant trades at the Charleston Job Corps Center. She will leave the Job Corps program at the end of June 2018 with the following certifications:

• DANB ICE (Dental Assistant National Board, Infection Control Exam)
• DANB Radiology Certification
• Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist
• Certified Medical Administrative Assistant
• OSHA
• HIPPA
• CPR/First Aid

Emily is enrolled at BridgeValley CTC for Dental Hygiene. Before coming to Job Corps she worked in fast food. Emily said, “I didn’t want to work there forever, I wanted to advance in my life and career.” A friend told her about Job Corps. “I researched the fastest growing careers and decided to enroll and take dental assistant,” said Luhrs.

She served as a peer counselor and as a member of Ladies with a Vision (recreation club) during her stay at Job Corps. Job Corps prepares youth 16-24 for careers, enlisting in the military, advanced training or college placement. Emily said, “it gave me the education, structure and employability skills to be successful. I had a lot of help with job search skills, resume writing and life skills such as how to search for housing, transportation (car) and more.” Emily will continue her studies on her own at BVCTC after completing Job Corps. She is still deciding whether to return to PA or relocate to WV. In closing, Emily says, “I feel like I have a support system for life. I know my life will improve through the education, training, and independent skills I learned at Job Corps, because I didn’t have those before.”

Emily enjoys writing poetry and songs. She enjoys hiking, exercising, drawing and being in nature. Her words of wisdom to Job Corps students and potential candidates is “Take advantage of everything Job Corps has to offer and be open to new opportunities in life.”
