Charleston Job Corps Holds AmeriCorp Interest Meeting on Feb 15

Charleston Job Corps Business Liaison, Nancy Shepherd Invited Dana Bryant, Communications Coordinator of Volunteer West Virginia  to discuss the AmeriCorps Program to  students who have expressed an interest in the program upon completion of Job Corps.  The students in attendance were:  Devonte Crisp, Aaron Long, Angel Morales, Isaiah Smith-Owens, Ryah Cruz, Daisia Mooring, Nayim Wells, Russell Scritchfield, Markel Lewis, Keith Cuffee and Nadyrah Brooks.
Each were given a questionnaire to determine their areas of interest.  Once completed a full description of each program was given along with the many benefits awarded.  Students were intrigued with the opportunities afforded with each program as well as the Regions of which to choose.
Most student areas of interest were with the National Civilian Community Corps.   AmeriCorps NCCC is a full-time, residential, team-based program for young adults, age 18-24 (with no upper age limit to serve as a team leader).  Members develop leadership skills and strengthen communities by completing service projects and gaining life experience.   Teams, comprised of 8-10 members, complete multiple projects that address essential community needs throughout the United States. During the 10-month service term, members receive lodging, transportation, uniform and meals.
Upon the completion of the program, members are eligible to receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award equal to the maximum Pell Grant amount: $6095.  The mission of the NCCC is to strengthen communities and develop leaders through team-based national and community service.
