Charleston Job Corps students volunteer and participate in City of Charleston MLK Celebration

Charleston Job Corps students were participants and volunteers during the City of Charleston’s historical event of naming a prominent street in the downtown historical Triangle District after the civil right leader, the late, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Senators, Delegates, the Mayor of Charleston, City Council members and clergy as well as residents of Charleston all took part in this historical event.

Twelve students accompanied by the center’s BCL, Nancy Shepherd, attended the unveiling ceremony which took place on January 20, 2020, at 1pm in front of the Town Center Mall. Following the unveiling ceremony, the Martin Luther King chorus commemorated the event in song.

Immediately following the unveiling, all participants joined in the unity march along the newly named Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Way, which commenced at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center for the birthday celebration.

During the festivities of the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Charleston Job Corps Students manned stations for interactive activities with the cities youth which included an art contest, face paintings and a scavenger hunt.
