The Cleveland Job Corps Center, in partnership with the Cleveland Council on World Affairs, recently hosted a delegation from Brazil. With a topical focus of, “Building Partnership for Vocational and technical Education,” Cleveland was the perfect city-stop. These International Visitor Leadership Program participants, which is a U.S. Department of State-sponsored exchange program to build relationships with emerging leaders, had backgrounds ranging from public policy to vocational training. On a cold, winter day in Cleveland, Ohio the delegation was warmly greeted by two Student Government Assocation Leaders from Job Corps’ Executive Board, David Grier and Deliska Williams, Business and Community Liaison, and Saulette Reed, Executive Secretary for the Center Director. The group was escorted to the conference room where they were greeted by the Center Director, William Houston, Woody Allen, Director of Finance and Administration, Michael Taylor, Business and Community Liaison, and Ramon Serrato, President & CEO Serrato Corporation. The program began with inroiductions and then the program proceeded. The Center’s Directer presentation consisted of the mission and history of the Cleveland Job Corps Center. The Job Corps program was established by the Economics Opportunity Act of 1964, and was designed to assist young people who could benefit from intensive educational programs, vocational training and other services while living in a residential setting. The Cleveland Job Corps Center has two vocational clusters, Health and Construction. Health trades are MOS Medical Office Support, STNA Nurse Assistant/Home Health Aide, Medical Assistant, and Pharmacy Technician. Construction trades include, Bricklaying, Facilities Maintenece, Carpentry and Sign & Display. Some questions from the delegation were: “What is your relationship with employers?” The CJCC has a Center Industry Council that is comprised of employers like the Cleveland Clinic and labor unions. The role is to review the CJCC, TARS (curriculum), talk to instructors about what they are presenting to the classroom, and then make recommendations for improvement. “What are the qualifications to enter into the Cleveland Job Corps Center?” The delegation was given a job corps welcome package from Outreach and Admissions. The Center Director provided a tour starting with Facilities Maintenance, Bricklaying, Sign & Display and Carpentry. Then it was on to the Educational Building where they met the Academic Manager, Mrs. Cindy Santoro, who took them to visit two classrooms. The highlight of the tour was the dormitory. Once again, this is what separates Job Corps from other vocational training programs. Residential living is a top priority for the Job Corps. This is where social development happens. The delegation was very impressed with the Cleveland Job Corps Center and pictures were taken to capture the fond memories of the day. The Cleveland Council of World Affairs, in partnership with the U.S. Department of State, brings 250+ international visitors from more than 60 countries to Cleveland every year to build global ties and improve our standing in the world.
