Cleveland Job Corps 2020 Martin Luther King Day of Service

Student leaders from the Cleveland Job Corps Center united with other Job Corps Centers across the country in observance of the 2020 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Lambda Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Cleveland Job Corps Center (CJCC), and members of the community volunteered at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center on January 19, 2020. CJCC Medical Office Support Instructor Nicole Jackson, CJCC Student Government Association (SGA) Coordinator Alene Tillie and CJCC SGA members joined others in fellowshipping and serving food to the veterans. Additionally, the team of volunteers verified the names and addresses of each veteran and registered them to vote in the upcoming primary election. The veterans were also presented with cards, enjoyed music, dance ministry and passages of scripture.

On January 20, 2020, CJCC Security Officer Belinda Bray accompanied Student Safety Cadets to Severance Hall for the “Celebrate the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Open House”. Students served as ushers and greeters in the performance hall. They were able to watch and listen to performances by the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, 400: An Afrikan Epic with Dr. Mark Lomax, II, An Afrikan Epic–A Conversation, and the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus. They participated in fun activities throughout the day like the, “I Have a Dream,” wall. “Our students were very excited to attend an Orchestra performance for the first time and to be a part of the celebration,” stated Belinda.

CJCC SGA Coordinator Alene Tillie and CJCC SGA members volunteered as greeters and ushers at the Cleveland Public Library’s 35th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on January 20, 2020, at John Hay High School. They also enjoyed the day’s activities and performances from the Imani Temple Ministries and Cleveland All-City Arts’ Vocal Ensemble.
