In 2015, under the advice of his aunt, Cleveland native Tevin Pierson enrolled in the Cleveland Job Corps Center. His Aunt explained to him that Job Corps offered the skilled training and career development that he needed. “This was an opportunity for me to get help with Career Development because I was not experiencing any growth on my own,” explained Tevin. He entered the program with a high school diploma from John Adams High School. Before coming to Cleveland Job Corps, Tevin was working at Dave’s Supermarket and taking classes at Cuyahoga Community College (TRI-C).

During his enrollment, Tevin Ocie obtained his NCCER Core Curriculum, UBC Pre-Apprentice Certificate, OSHA 10, Scaffold Safety, Green Awareness, Vinyl Siding, and HILTI Powder Actuated Tools certifications. He served as a dorm leader, participated in boxing, and other extra-curricular activities. He also helped build and install Little Free Libraries throughout Cleveland to promote literacy. “I appreciated how honest and upfront my instructors, David Lummus and Daniel Volpe was about everything I needed to do to be successful,” stated Tevin. “They motivated me, taught me good work ethics and how to work in a construction/manufacturing work environment.”

After graduating from Cleveland Job Corps, Tevin was hired at Hose Masters as a prepper, making $13.50 an hour. He enjoys what he is doing, and he is adapting very well to the work often finishing ahead of the deadlines. In his downtime, he works with his supervisor practicing his welding skills in hopes of being promoted to a welder full-time. “Never give up despite any hurdles you may encounter, the opportunities and training that Job Corps provides are worth the effort,” said Tevin.
