SGA DEBATE & ELECTIONS
On March 18, 2015, Cleveland Job Corps Centers (CJCC) students competing for Student Govern-ment Association (SGA) positions faced off at the 2015 SGA Spring debate. As the entire student body and CJCC staff filled the Recreation Facility, students campaigning for various SGA positions eagerly awaited to present their views and goals to the voters. CJCC Center Direc-tor, William Houston, opened the debate by clarifying the purpose and mission of the SGA. Debate moderator and SGA Coordinator, Katrina Hayden, introduced each candidate and stated the SGA position titles to which each student was cam-paigning. Candidates were given the platform to explain why voters should elect them for the SGA position. Next, Mrs. Hayden turned the debate over to the audi-ence for Q&A from the campaigning students. Driven by a question from Medical Office Support trainee, Ashley Fox, as to how the elected SGA Officials planned to make a difference while in office, candidates described their plans on implement-ing their change and putting it into action.
The following day polls were open in the Recreation Facility from 1:10 PM and closed at 3:25 PM. Each class on Center, led by the instructor, went to the facility, one by one, allowing every student a chance to engage in the democratic process. To ensure a fair election, the CJCC enlisted the help of the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections Community Outreach Manager Dennis Anderson to set up voting booths and tally the results. “This was one of the best elections I have been a part of and I am surprised at the turn out of students that came and voted,” conveyed Mr. Anderson.
