Gary Job Corps Joins America’s Largest Day of Service

Gary Job Corps JOINS AMERICA’S LARGEST DAY OF SERVICE
Gary Job Corps joined an estimated 3 million people participating simultaneously in “Make A Difference Day” activities nationwide by having over 500 students assisting with the clean-up of the devastating fire that destroyed 1386 homes covering 35,000 acres in Bastrop, Texas, conducting highway and park clean-ups, assisted at local food bank, and fundraising for the Susan G. Komen For the Cure Austin.  Administered by the U.S. Department of Labor, Job Corps is the nation’s oldest and largest residential job training program for economically disadvantaged young people ages 16-24. Last year, 11,598 Job Corps students and staff across the United States participated in “Make A Difference Day” projects.  Gary Job Corps is proud to be a part of Make A Difference Day for the 10th year in a row. Make A Difference Day was created as a “national day to help others,” and that’s exactly what Gary Job Corps will be doing.  “Gary students are committed partners in the greater San Marcos area that includes San Antonio and Austin, Texas.   As Center Director of the Gary Job Corps Community, I am very proud of the work that the students do in our community on a daily basis.  I am extremely pleased to announce that our students participated in a large number of community projects during the “Make a Difference Day”.  On a weekly basis, you will find Gary students working with community leaders on viable community projects that benefit the community at large.   Gary students know the value of giving back to our community because they have been the recipients of so many good deeds from staff, DOL and others; therefore, “Make a Difference Day” is everyday at Gary and not a one time celebration.  I invite each of you to visit Gary and check out our S.W.A.G. (Students With Ambitions and Goals)!” said Lonnie Hall, Gary Job Corps Center Director. Over the last 47 years, Job Corps has provided opportunities to more than 2 million economically disadvantaged young Americans. This voluntary education and job training program offers vocational, academic and social skills training to students at 125 centers nationwide.    For more information on Job Corps, visit http://jobcorps.dol.gov, information concerning Gary Job Corps http://gary.jobcorps.gov or call 512-396-6966.
