Glenlmont Reading 1 Class Learning Vocabulary Through Rap

Reading 1 students are learning vocabulary through rap. Each week the students listen to a rap CD while reading along on paper. Each rap highlights key vocabulary words that are used throughout the lesson. After the students hear the rap on CD, one student volunteers to show us their rapping abilities by re-rapping what we heard on the CD.

The Flocabulary Word Up Project teaches 140 vocabulary words to increase students’ reading comprehension and oral vocabulary. The units teach word meaning through a series of increasingly challenging exposures, including a nonfiction reading passage. The CD and book contain lessons, activities and tests for each unit.  The students really enjoyed showing off their rapping skills for their classmates. This helps to get students motivated for learning. The class is working to build enough courage for the whole class to rap together as a group.
