Lyndon B. Johnson named “Chamber Member of The Year”

Lyndon B. Johnson CCC has been recently named “Chamber Member of the Year” by the local area Chamber of Commece. LBJ has accomplished an exciting year in regards to being involved in various community projects throughout Macon County. In the 2011 year alone, LBJ has been involved in local community projects such as,

  • Easter Egg Hunt: April 2011- Each year the Macon Program For Progress celebrate their annual Easter Egg Hunt at the local Recreation Park. LBJ students along with the SGA organization volunteer their services to assist with face painting, tug-o-war, musical performances, hula-hoop contest, in addition to stuffing 1800 plastic eggs, and baking cookies for the Head Start Children.
  • Halloween in the Park: In October 2011- Lyndon B. Johnson CCC Student Government Association partnered with the Kiwanis Club and Key Club for halloween festivities. LBJs vocation department of Painting and Carpentry created a “Spooky House” out a refrigerator box and made several wood coffins. Students also assisted with passing out candy to the local community.
  • Mountain High BBQ Festival: July 2011- The Facilities Maintenance Vocation in association with the Chamber of Commerce assembled for a two day event featuring a BBQ competition, live entertainment, a car show, and BBQ taste testing. Facilities Maintenance assisted with setting up tents, guided parking, selling merchandise, and setting up tables. 
  • Gem Show: September 2011- Lyndon B. Johnson CCC Facilities Maintenance Vocation assisted the G&LW Gem Show at the Veterans Memorial Rec. Center. Students set up chairs, tables, lined the floor with electrical padding and tape to secure for the safety of vendors and visitors.
  • Franklin Highschool: June 2011- Several vocations pulled their classes together, brick, concrete, and carpentry to complete two storage buildings, build decorative steps, and expand the walkway area.
  • Celebrity Reader Program (MPP) Macon Program For Progress: May 2011- Five SGA students from LBJ assisted the Head Start Program in different classes with tutoring, reading, creative arts, listening skills, and social skills.
  •  Relay For Life: August 2011- Lyndon B. Johnson CCC made a difference in helping the American Cancer Society “Relay for Life”. LBJ students participated in activities such as, spirit walkers, game attendants and other activities as needed.
  • Post Office: July 2011- The painting vocation provided assistance to the local Post Office with a CTST project that required steady hands in restriping lines in the parking lot, repainting directional arrows, and handicap decals.
  • Highway Cleanup: May 2011- This project consisted of eleven students from SGA and “Green Team” who assemble quarterly to pick up trash along the highway that center have adopted since 2004.
  • Conservation Field Day: November 2011- The Culinary Arts Vocation annually partners with the middle school and SGA students to prepare a lunch for a two day event in which, seventh graders rotate through different stations to learn that conservation has an impact on them and they have an impact on the environment. Some of the activities included, fish shocking, bee keeping, a fire presentation and erosion control. As a bonus, an essay writing contest is held in which three winners receive a gift for writing about “The Most Important thing I learned at Conservation Field Days”.
  • Macon Middle School: September 2011- The Carpentry and Welding vocations were instrumental in building a retaining wall, concrete steps and handrails at the middle school.

This year Lyndon B. Johnson CCC plans are to exceed last year’s accomplishments in the community by developing more meaningful partnerships through CTST projects, Job Shadowing, Work Base Learning sites, and Student Internships .
