Humanitarian Event Honors MJCC Alumni

On April 21, MJCC Alumni Elijah Rivers participated in the 1st Annual Humanitarian Honors Youth Power Movement Extravaganza.  The event, which was held at the Agadin Moroccan Restaurant in Adventura, commemorated special guests for making an important difference in the lives of Miami area school children. Founded by distinguished businessman and community activist Henry Petithomme, Youth Power Movement(YPM) is an influential non-profit organization that links youth with creating positive social change in our community.  Honorary guests included NBA basketball celebrity Tim Hardaway, Brickell Motors CEO Mario Murgado, Miami Philanthropist Kimberly Shenker-Bacardi and Congresswoman Frederica Wilson. WSVN 7 News sports anchor Donovan Campbell hosted the event, Congresswoman Wilson gave an inspirational speech and YPM youth honoree Elijah Rivers provided a testimonial.  Rivers, who participated in YPM during the time he was a student in the Office Administration trade at Miami Job Corps Center,  is now enrolled at St. Thomas University and is working towards a B.A. in Criminal Justice.  His goal is to go to law school and one day practice Criminal and Corporate Law.  Also during the awards ceremony, Tim Hardaway was presented with an award from YPM for impacting the lives of children and youth in the community. Hardaway, one of YPM’s Board of Directors, is also the founder of the Tim Hardaway Foundation that supports community based organizations with an emphasis on health, fitness and education. After receiving the award, Hardaway said, “ Henry teaches kids how youth can go out there and be confident and succeed and go to school and be respectful and that they can be anything they want to become.  Yet  it’s not easy, you’ve got to put time into it!.”  Highlights also included a silent auction, gourmet cuisine, Jazz music and an art exhibit by acclaimed artist Joel Gresham. Channel 7 news and the Miami Herald Newspaper covered the event. -L.Trujillo
