NOLA Med Student Interns at Local Radio Station

Bob Dylan called it his favorite radio station in the world.

WWOZ is the official station of Jazz Fest. In June and July, Keitshal Alexander, a Medical Office Support student at New Orleans Job Corps Center, had a chance to work there as part of Mayor Landrieu’s NOLA Youth Works Summer Employment Program

“It was exciting. I got to see how the announcers record and how they post things to the station’s Facebook page,” said Keitshal. “I saw the station’s deejays playing music on the air.” She says the internship was valuable in helping her to reach her ultimate goal of working in a medical office after graduating from Job Corps. “I was answering the phones in a professional office so that was a learning experience-taking call and referring them to the right person.”

While Keitshal admits to being nervous on her first few days on the job- “all those computers and buttons and switches in the radio studio”- she says with a smile, “It turned out great.”
