Leisure Time Work Pays Off for Shawnyqua Ellis
By Jeanne Vaughan, Business Community Liaison
Ms. Shawnyqua Ellis, a plumbing student at Old Dominion Job Corps, started orientation with Lowes on September 7, 2011. She is employed as a Cashier at $8.60 an hour. She is an active student at ODJCC and works for Lowes in the evenings and weekends.
Mr. Richard Benoit, Work Base Learning Specialist at ODJCC, works closely with Mr. Gregg Phelps, Human Resources Manager at Lowes, to assure the student is meeting expectations. In Shawnyqua’s case, Mr. Phelps says that Shawnyqua is progressing and doing a great job. He said she is very smart and a quick learner. He likes the fact that she is punctual and dependable.
Shawnyqua’s separation date from ODJCC is scheduled for December 2011 and she hopes that she will be able to transfer to a Lowes store in close proximity to her home in the Tidewater area of Virginia.
If Shawnyqua continues on the path she is on at Lowes, she should be able to secure a job with Lowes when she returns to her home. Her goal is to work at Lowes in the Plumbing Department someday.
