Event celebrates 47 years of the Job Corps program

The National Job Corps Association has proclaimed Aug. 30, 2011, as the official day of commemoration marking the 47th anniversary of the Job Corps program, which began with the signing by President Lyndon B. Johnson of the Economic Opportunity Act in August 1964.

To commemorate the day Old Dominion Job Corps Center hosted its Quarterly Community Relations Committee Breakfast on Tuesday, August 30, at 8:30 a.m. in the Center’s dining hall.  The breakfast was prepared by Old Dominion culinary arts students.

Virginia’s Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling served as keynote speaker for the event. The topic of his presentation included his and Governor McDonnell’s #1 Priority which is economic development and job creation. When Lt.Gov. Bolling was sworn into office, Governor McDonnell appointed him Chief Jobs Creation Officer of Virginia. The Lt. Gov. presented information on the positive results of the state’s economic development efforts. In January 2010 Virginia’s budget had a $6 billion dollar shortfall; and as of July 1, 2011, Virginia’s budget had a surplus of $545 million (2/3 of the surplus due to increased withholdings).

Upon accepting Old Dominion’s invitation to speak, Lieutenant Governor Bolling stated “A skilled workforce is critical to recruiting new business and jobs to the region. I am looking forward to speaking about the Administration’s economic and workforce development strategies and learning more about Old Dominion Jobs Corps efforts to provide quality workforce training programs for the Amherst and Lynchburg area.”

Virginia’s Delegates Scott Garrett and Ben Cline were in attendance as well as District Representative Clarkie Eppes from Rep. Bob Goodlatte’s office and Director of Outreach Scott Leake from Representative Robert Hurt’s office. Community leaders, members of the community, and employers enjoyed the breakfast and the opportunity to hear the positive economic news presented by Lt. Gov. Bolling.
