Zahra Husseini, 21, is from Afghanistan. She came to this country in July 2016 with her parents and two sisters and pretty much had to learn English all over again.

“When I was in my country I went to some English classes but that’s very different from here,” said Husseini.
Husseini enrolled in Phoenix Job Corps in January 2017 and graduated in July 2017.

“This was my first time in a job corps center,” Husseini added. “It helped me a lot. I went to an English class here, math class there. Talking to the instructors and students helped me a lot.”

She’s currently a full-time student at Phoenix College and works full-time at a 99-cents store. She studied office administration while studying for her high school diploma. “That’s the big success in my life,” said Husseini.

As a result of getting a job after graduation, Husseini was able to buy a car.

“Mr. Harvey helped me to go to Phoenix College because I did not know how to enroll in college, how to pay for it,” said Husseini. “So, he really helped me from applying for financial aid to getting enrolled in college. I wanted to go to Phoenix College because it’s near my home. He took me there, too. And that was really helpful. I started college in August 2017. I just completed my first year.”

Now, Husseini’s trying to find a better job. “Because my major is accounting, I’m trying to find jobs that apply to that,” she said.

Her long-term goal? “I want to be a lawyer.”
