San Diego Job Corps Students Attend Construction Expo

Karen Linehan, Outreach Program Manager for the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD), advised that over 450 people attended last week’s Construction Expo at Construction Tech Academy at Kearny High School in San Diego.  The annual event is San Diego’s preeminent construction-focused procurement event for contractors, architects, engineers, and construction-related vendors, suppliers and manufacturers.

Four San Diego Job Corps students representing the center’s Welding and Carpentry Career Technical Training Pathways attended the event.  “We appreciated the school district inviting us to participate today,” advised Glaston Zollicoffer, a Career Transition Specialist at the center located in Imperial Beach.  “It was a great opportunity for our students to share information about Job Corps with the attendees and to talk with potential employers.”

One of the Job Corps students taking part in the Expo was 22 year old welding student Richard Yanez.  Yanez, who is from Bakersfield California. “A lot of people came to our table to learn about Job Corps,” Yanez stated.  “I expect to finish my trade this year, so this was a good opportunity to learn about possible jobs.  Actually two employers gave me their cards and I’ll be following up with them.”

Job Corps has become the largest job training program in the U.S. and teaches low-income young people skills while removing obstacles from their career pathway.  Since the program began nearly 3 million young people have graduated from the program and gone on to higher education, the military, or full-time employment.

“Our center is one of 125 Job Corps centers located throughout the country,” Zollicoffer stated.
“We offer training in 17 trades to the 525 students enrolled at our center. We also have an excellent relationship with hundreds of employers, and participating in events like today increases the likelihood of our graduates finding the jobs they were trained for.”

Zollicoffer added that he was pleased with the way the students greeted visitors to the Job Corps table.  “They were enthusiastic about the Job Corps program and their future careers, and I’m sure that impressed the people who talked with them.”
