Treasure Island Job Corps was honored to have the Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor Portia Wu on center. During her visit, Assistant Secretary Wu toured our culinary department and enjoyed a brick-oven pizza lunch on our Michelle Obama Green Acre Urban Farm. Ms. Wu spoke with culinary students about the program, their classes and goals after Job Corps.
The Advanced Pastry class treated Assistant Secretary Wu to an overview of cake decorating and the best way to work with fondant before giving out samples of their work. The next stop was Advanced Baking where students were eager to give out samples and talk about the skills they have learned while in Treasure Island’s Advanced Culinary program. After viewing our culinary department, Assistant Secretary Portia Wu made her way to our farm for lunch.
The warm weather and scenic Michelle Obama Green Acre Farm provided the perfect location for lunch, prepared by our “farm club” culinary students. Club members tend crops while learning about gardening, harvesting and seasonal eating. The menu was brick-oven pizza with farm fresh veggie toppings and salad. During lunch, Assistant Secretary Wu chatted with Business Construction Technology (BCT) students about their work on the farm and how the planter boxes were built using reclaimed cement from the Bay Bridge.
Treasure Island Job Corps feels very privileged to have had Ms. Wu and her staff come for a visit to our center and speak to our student. We look forward to her return to our center in the near future.
